An ankle sprain is one of the most common lower limb injuries to occur during exercise and daily activity. An ankle sprain is where the ligaments around the inside and outside of the ankle are strained, torn or ruptured. This can occur whilst stopping suddenly during sport or whilst walking on uneven ground. Some sign that an ankle sprain has occurred include: pain when moving your foot from side to side, unable to weight bear on the affected foot, severe swelling around the ankle and also bruising around the ankle.

An ankle sprain can be classified into 3 different categories: grade 1, 2 and 3. A grade 1 sprain is mild, a grade 2 sprain is moderate and a grade 3 sprain is severe. There are also 2 different types of an ankle sprain that can occur. The first type is an inversion ankle sprain. This is where the foot is inverted to much and affects the outside of the ankle. The other type is an eversion ankle sprain. This is where the foot is everted to much and the inside part of the ankle is affected.

We can provide a thorough assessment of your ankle sprain and provide treatments which include: providing compression wraps and ice treatments. The best form of treatment for an ankle sprain is to be fitted with an orthopaedic walking boot or CAM walker. This needs to be worn for at least 2 weeks with the first week being with crutches. We also provide rehabilitation programs for ankle sprains which consists of a 3-6 week program of stretching and strengthening exercises.
